Garden tips often refer to digging out bean trenches where Peas and Beans are to be planted. Dig a trench, add paper shredding and kitchen waste such as veg peelings. Plant beans over this for, so it's suggested, great crops.
This season The Sunday Gardener is doing a trial having two trenches. One with shredded paper and kitchen waste and opposite in exactly the same growing medium and conditions, another Bean trench. Into both will be planted Broad beans, Runner and French Beans and Peas; and then stand back to see the results.
Photos will be on the web site later in the year with comments as to yields and hopefully we will know if this tip is worthwhile or not. Watch this space.
